We helped our friend live longer-- SHE GOT HIT BY THE SCORPIONS' TOUR BUS!
I rushed out of the house for work Saturday morning and forgot my bike helmet but rode anyway cause I didn't want to be late.
After work I rode to the Alternative Transportation & Energy Festival downtown to visit Zach & Alex who were there promoting H.E.L.L. (Help Everyone Live Longer). I told them I forgot my helmet so Alex gave me an extra one to borrow for the ride home...
I was heading down Boylston street (I usually ride through the park but I was already on the street) and hear a bellowing honk that sounded too close for comfort as I turned the corner. I turn around and see this huge fucking couch bus riding my ass. I was as far over to the right as I could be and had no where to go, there wasn't a shoulder. It honks again right before it side-swipes me and knocks me down. I was so in shock that I was just hit by a bus that I couldn't move, I didn't even get out of the street, some nice girl from Emerson ran over and snapped me out of it and helped me onto the sidewalk. The initial hit was to my left hand and elbow, which hurt the most, so I didn't even realize I was also knocked on the side of my head until much later when I looked at the helmet and saw the aftermath scraped along the side of it.
If Alex hadn't offered me his helmet that day I definitely would have been in much worse shape than I am right now. (thank you so much dude).
This is when things go from bad to bizarre:
The bus stops and some man in a button up shirt and leather boots runs over to me. He looked more nervous then concerned. "Are you okay, did I hit you?" I showed him my red hand. "I guess this is when I ask you for your information," I said. "Okay, whatever I can do to help." He runs back and grabs a piece of paper and gives me his info. I can hardly move my fingers. He returns and says, "Look, my band is playing a show in Boston, you can come check us out and we can talk about what to do next." "What? I'm not going to your show look at my fucking hand, I have to walk to the hospital." "Okay but after that? You probably have heard of us, Scorpions. We're playing at the Orpheum." "What!?" "Have you heard of us? Well, we were really popular in the 80's." (Did he really just say that?).
It didn't register in my head WHO they actually were until about 10 minutes after that conversation, on the way to the hospital. I started laughing really hard when I got to the hospital. I'm sure the nurses thought I was nuts. I was led to a room to wait for a doctor to examine me. All I could think about what, "I can't believe I was hit by the Scorpions tour bus." And that thought led to the idea of making a T-shirt that had something along the lines of "I got run over by the Scorpions and survived!" Or something kitsch like that. (I still want to do that so help me think of a design).
So, the helmet saved my life and the band ruined it. At least I'll have a good story to tell my future children. ROCK ME LIKE A HURRICANE"
Gordon Riker and Kelly Wallace both were killed in automobile accidents while riding their bikes through the streets of Boston. These two individuals had their entire lives ahead of them and our organization is trying to help prevent more of Boston's youth from dying in senseless accidents.
Helping Everyone Live Longer (HELL) is raising money to purchase and distribute free helmets to anyone who wants one. Or if you would like to purchase a helmet at cost, please contact Zack Smith. They will only set you back $25 and could save your life.
